Have you ever tried ordering a pepperoni pizza in Israel?
While not impossible, ordering pepperoni pizza can be difficult because most restaurants in Israel keep kosher.
Even if you are not Jewish, you are probably familiar with the Hebrew word “kosher.” But what does this word, most often associated with food, actually mean?
Kosher means “fit” or “proper”
When it comes to food, kosher defines which foods are fit to eat under Jewish law. These laws are derived from the Torah, primarily from Leviticus and Deuteronomy.
While there are different levels of keeping kosher, it is ultimately about honoring God.
In Israel kosher is also used in slang. Saying “that’s not kosher” means “that’s not quite right.”
